Each session is designed to help students learn techniques, tap into their creative side,

and put it to paper in a creative way.

 

Through this practice, students will gain additional writing experience and confidence,

and have some fun in the process!

Week 1

  • Introductory PowerPoint of the course schedule

  • Go over 7 elements

    • Plot

    • Point-of-view

    • Character

      • Dynamic vs. Static characters

      • Name & basic life stats

      • Physical description

      • Background- important life moments that affected their views/opinions/feelings/actions

      • Personal relationships

      • Mind status: be able to see the world from their eyes

      • Importance to the story

    • Setting

    • Style

    • Theme

    • Literary Devices

  • Spend time developing a character

  • Brainstorming vs. Prewriting

Week 2

  • Different types of fiction:

    • Historical fiction

    • Mystery

    • Horror

    • Realistic fiction

    • Fantasy

    • Sci-fi

    • Dystopia vs. Utopia

  • Showing not telling

    • Adverbs

    • 5 senses activity

      • Share

  • In class: pick one of three ideas

  • Homework: have an idea and pre-write done

    • Outline work

Week 3

  • Setting

    • Describe in detail

    • Imagery

    • Can also set theme

  • Theme vs. Mood

  • Style: personal writing tones and styles

  • Work on writing rough drafts

Week 4

  • Rough draft due

  • Peer-editing guidelines

  • Short paragraph editing activity

  • Editing vs. revising

  • Exchange writings activity

  • Answer questions

Week 5

  • Last literary device

  • Welcome parents

  • Students will give a short presentation and read their favorite paragraph from the story they have written

  • Discussion of future classes

  • Grades will be sent out on Monday
